COVID-19 has put a hold on many activities: in-person classes, in-person dining, weddings, concerts, and more. One activity that you may not be able to postpone, though, is moving. Maybe you receive a new job offer that requires you to relocate or decide to move in with roommates to save money. Whatever the reason may be, planning your move will take time and effort. Here is how you can successfully and safely move during COVID-19.

Give Yourself Enough Time to Plan

Moving is hard already. Top it off with a global pandemic, and things could get complicated. That is why you should give yourself enough time to prepare. Contact moving companies weeks, if not months, before your big day to schedule an appointment. Rent a moving truck as soon as possible. If you are flying, book your tickets and familiarize yourself with the airline’s cancellation and face mask policies so that you arrive at the airport prepared for the journey.

Lastly, if you need to condense your belongings and plan to donate them, check with local donation sites to see what their COVID-19 policies are. Some locations may be by appointment only.

Buy More Materials Than You Think You Need

No one wants to run to Lowe’s multiple times for moving boxes. In preparation for moving during COVID-19, buy extra moving materials to avoid making numerous trips and risking exposure to the virus. Make a list of all the items you need (cleaning supplies, boxes, bubble wrap, etc.), and take one day to gather all the supplies. Consider even utilizing curbside pickup, a service that many stores are now offering due to the pandemic.

Follow All CDC Safety Guidelines

The most important aspect of moving during COVID-19 is that you and your loved ones are safe during the process. Ensure that you and those helping are following all CDC and social distancing guidelines, including wearing face masks. Consider buying a large container of hand sanitizer, and encourage everyone to use it throughout the day. If you want to offer food or beverages to your helpers, only buy snacks and treats that are individually packaged. While you can’t beat the convenience of takeout pizza, now may not be the best time for everyone to put their hands in the same box. It is better to be safe than sorry!

At Stonybrook Apartment Homes, you can find comfort in knowing that we thoroughly sanitize each apartment before new move-ins and that we disinfect high traffic areas throughout the property multiple times a day. Our cleaning protocols combined, with your following the three tips above, will ensure that you have a safe and successful moving experience.
